Fernestanol is a slow-evaporaing, water-insoluble alcohol ester with a variety of industrial applications. It’s primary use is as a coalescing solvent for latex paints, but it can also be used as a retarder solvent for coil coatings and higk bake enamels, or as a chemical intermediate to make plasticizers.

As a coalescing solvent, Fernestanol is a premier choice. Its performance is comparable to the industry standard Texanol. Fernestanol is best used for latex emulsions, and is even stable in high pH acrylics. Since it is not water soluble, it will integrate with the polymer particles in the paint formulation and remain in the resin after drying in order to promote complete fusion within the final film. It is a good choice even for porous surfaces, as it will not leech past the initial surface. Fernestanol provides high film integrity and good performance regarding scrub resistance, color development, and package stability.

The unique balance of properties in Fernestanol also make it useful for enhancing the thickening efficiency of associative thickeners, encouraging film formation in situations with a low environment temperature or high glass transition temperature, as a recovery solvent in drilling muds and ore flotation processes, in floor polishes, nail polishes, and wood preservatives.
