These products are used mainly as solubilizers and emulsifiers exhibiting low toxicity.  Furthermore, they provide wetting, stabilizing, dispersing, and viscosity modifying properties in several applications

Industries where are they used:

Sorbitan Ester Ethoxylates are used as a solubilizer and surfactant in the preparation of emulsions, creams, soaps and ointments in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.  They are used as emulsifiers, defoamers and stabilizers in the food, medicine, vitamin and vaccine industries.

They are also used in agrochemical formulations, in the metalworking industry, as anti-fogging agents in plastic films and as textile fiber lubricants, softeners and emulsifiers in polymerisation processes in the textile and leather industries.

Types of Sorbitan Ester Ethoxylates:

Sorbitan esters (also known as Spans,) when used alone, produce stable water-in-oil emulsions, but they are frequently used with a polysorbate in varying proportions to produce water-in-oil or oil-in-water emulsions or creams with a variety of different textures and consistencies.  The most common of these Polysorbates* are: Polysorbate 20, Polysorbate 40, Polysorbate 60 and Polysorbate 80.

 *The number following the ‘polysorbate’ part is related to the type of fatty acid associated with the polyoxyethylene sorbitan part of the molecule. Monolaurate is indicated by 20, monopalmitate is indicated by 40, monostearate by 60, and monooleate by 80.
